Bristol Tennessee City Schools Athletic Hall of Fame Inducts Inaugural Class

BRISTOL, TENN.— Sept. 8, 2024— The Bristol Tennessee City Schools (BTCS) Athletic Hall of Fame inaugural class was inducted September 8 at Tennessee High’s Viking Hall, where the permanent Hall of Fame display was also unveiled.

Host and emcee Paul Johnson presided over the ceremony, recognizing individual athletes, teams, coaches, and special contributors who have made noteworthy contributions to the school district’s athletic programs at Tennessee High School and Slater High School. Tennessee High School, established in 1916, and Slater High School, which served black students from 1919 until its integration with Tennessee High in 1965, both boast a rich tradition of athletic excellence.

The 2024 class of the BTCS Athletic Hall of Fame includes 21 individuals and five teams from various sports and eras.

“This is a momentous occasion, marking the beginning of a tradition that will honor the history of athletic excellence in our community,” said Annette Tudor, BTCS director of schools. “One of the core values of this endeavor is to recognize the outstanding athletic achievements that have played a vital role in our entire community’s history. We are honored to have representatives from Slater High School and Tennessee High School as inductees.

Throughout this process, it has been my privilege to learn about the history and tradition of the Slater Wolves and the Tennessee High Vikings and how those traditions have shaped who we are now as one Viking Nation, especially during this time when we have so many exciting things happening within our athletics community.”

The BTCS Athletic Hall of Fame is an ongoing endeavor, with new elements to be added over the coming years to celebrate and preserve the rich athletic history of the two schools. Moving forward, the community can submit nominations for the 2025 class via the BTCS Athletic Hall of Fame website. Individuals can make nominations to recognize former athletes, coaches, teams, or special contributors. Athletes and coaches must be five years removed from the athletic program to be eligible.

Bristol Tennessee City Schools Announces Inaugural Athletic Hall of Fame

BRISTOL, TENN.— July 8, 2024— Bristol Tennessee City Schools (BTCS) is proud to announce the establishment of the Bristol Tennessee City Schools Athletic Hall of Fame. The inaugural class will be inducted on Sunday, September 8, at Tennessee High School, starting with a ceremony at 3 p.m. in the auditorium and continuing in Viking Hall, where the permanent Hall of Fame display will be unveiled.

This prestigious new initiative will recognize and honor athletes, teams, coaches, administrators and special contributors who have made historically noteworthy contributions to the school district’s athletic programs, including both Tennessee High School and Slater High School. Tennessee High School, which first opened its doors in 1916, and Slater High School, which served African American students from 1919 until its integration with Tennessee High School in 1965, both have a rich tradition of athletic excellence.

“It is important for us to recognize individuals from both schools, as some truly incredible athletes played sports at THS and Slater,” said Lori Worley, who serves on the BTCS Athletic Hall of Fame advisory committee. “The same can be said of the many coaches, administrators and special contributors who supported the schools. With both schools opening more than 100 years ago, the creation of a sports hall of fame has been a long time coming.”

The inaugural class of the BTCS Athletic Hall of Fame includes a diverse group of 26 individuals and teams from various sports and different eras, representing both schools’ exceptional talent and dedication. This meticulous selection process involved extensive research and time from a dedicated advisory committee.

Tommy McDaniel, affectionately known as "Captain Mac," also serves on the advisory committee. He highlighted the effort behind the selection process, saying, “Selecting the inaugural class was not an easy task. It required a great deal of research and time from a group of committed individuals who are very familiar with the athletic programs at Slater and THS. We feel we’ve got a solid group in this inaugural class, all very deserving of being part of the BTCS Athletic Hall of Fame.”

The BTCS Athletic Hall of Fame is designed to be an ongoing project, with new elements added over the coming years to celebrate and preserve the rich athletic history of our schools. Moving forward, the community can submit nominations via the BTCS Athletic Hall of Fame website. Nominations can be made by individuals or anyone wishing to recognize a former athlete or special contributor. To be eligible, nominees must have been out of school for at least five years.
