Larry Silcox – 1973 (Tennessee High School)

Larry Silcox was a standout in football and track at Tennessee High school, garnering multiple honors in both sports.

Silcox played on the 1971 Tennessee State Championship football team and was a member of the 1972 Tennessee State Championship and National Championship Viking team. He was a two-way starter for three years during the Vikings’ historic 35-1 run (10-1, 1970; 12-0, 1971, 13-0, 1972).

In football during the 1971 season, he was All-City, All-Big 5, All-Big 9, All-Upper East Tennessee, and the Vikings’ team MVP. During the 1972 season, he was All-City, All-Big 5, All-Big 9, All-Upper East Tennessee, All-East Tennessee, All-State, All-Southern All-American, a Sunkist Honorable Mention Prep All-American, and the Vikings’ co-captain.

Over his career, Silcox caught 78 passes for 1,737 yards (22.3 avg. per catch) scored 24 touchdowns, and had 14 extra points. In 1972, he snagged 31 passes for 657 yards.

Silcox holds a number of THS records, including most receiving yards in a game – 169 in 1972 against Sullivan East, most receiving yards in a season – 798 in 1971, and most career yards – 1,737 from 1970-’72. He also holds the Viking record for most receiving touchdowns in a career with 21 and for total pass receptions with 78 from 1970-’72.

Silcox ran track in 1970, 1971, and 1972 and was named to the All-Big 9 team as a senior. 

Silcox received a scholarship to play football at the University of Tennessee and later played at East Tennessee State University.
