Greg Jones – 1974 (Tennessee High School)
Greg Jones was a triple threat on the football field for the Vikings and was also a member of the THS track and field team throughout a star-studded prep career.
Jones played on the 1971 Tennessee State Championship football team and was a member of the 1972 Tennessee State Championship and National Championship Viking team.
Jones was a standout linebacker, fullback, and kicker for the Vikings. He was a two-time All-State football selection in 1972 and 1973, and as a senior, participated in the East-West All-Star Game.
In 1972, he was All-Big 5, All-Big 9, All-Upper East Tennessee and caught 31 passes for 469 yards, averaging 15.1 yards a catch.
In 1973, he was a Top 50 recruit. He was also the Big 6 Lineman of the Year, the Big 9 Lineman of the Year, the All-Upper East Tennessee Lineman of the Year. He was named to the All-Southern All-American Team, the Parade Magazine All-American High School Football Team, and was a member of the Tennessee Sportswriter’s All-State Team.
Jones is still tied for the THS record for touchdown passes in a game, with three caught against Sullivan Central in 1971. He also holds the Viking record for most tackling assists in a game, recording 16 against Dobyns-Bennett in 1973. Jones is tied for the record for tackling assists in a season with 75 and holds the record for career tackle assists with 153 from 1971-1973.
In track and field, Jones was All-Big 9 in the shot put and discus.
Jones, one of the top recruits in the country in 1973, received a scholarship to play at the University of Tennessee. He was the Chevrolet Player of the Game against Alabama his junior year after recording 25 tackles. His senior season he was captain of the Vols and was the Sports Illustrated Player of the Week after notching 26 tackles (19 solo) against Vanderbilt in his final game for UT. He also had an interception, a fumble recovery, and a pass breakup in that game. Jones still holds the record for most tackles in a game for the Vols.
