Courtney McDaniel - 2000 (Tennessee High School)
Courtney McDaniel was one of the best female athletes to ever participate in sports at Tennessee High, starring in both basketball and track and field.
McDaniel was a finalist for the Tennessee Miss Basketball Award in 2000 and a four-time All-State selection. She was also named a USA Today Honorable Mention All-American and a Nike and L’adidas All-American. Her senior season, she was named the USA Today and Gatorade Player of the Year in Tennessee. She was also a Street & Smith Honorable Mention All-American and a member of the All-Southern team. According to Blue Star Index she was the No. 37 and No. 39 overall prospect in the country in 2000.
She was also named the Northeast Tennessee Basketball Player of the Year and was All-Conference for all four years of high school. She also received the Player of the Year award from the Tennessee Sports Writers Association for all four years at THS.
Over her prep career, McDaniel scored a school record 2,722 points and grabbed more than 10 rebounds, averaging over 20 points and 10 boards per game during her career at Tennessee High. She also holds the school records for career blocks (80), most points scored in a season (765), and most rebounds in a season (374).
McDaniel lettered four times in both basketball and track and field. As a senior, she placed second in the state in the discus and is the THS record holder in the event. She also participated in state competitions in the high jump (1998) and shot put (1999). She has some of the school’s best-ever showings in high jump (second on the list), pentathlon (fourth), triple jump (seventh), long jump (14th), and 100 hurdles (11th).
Highly recruited out of high school, McDaniel chose to play for Coach Pat Summitt at the University of Tennessee, where she played in 101 games for the Lady Vols. Afterward, she was named the European Basketball League’s American Player of the Year in 2005 and 2006.
