1971 State Championship Football Team
After watching the 1970 Tennessee High team record a 10-1 mark and go undefeated in the regular season, the 1971 Vikings had some unfinished business to handle. And handle it, they did as they went 12-0 and captured the school’s first Class AAA state title at home in front of a packed Stone Castle.
The Maroon Machine was on fire that season as the Vikings annihilated Chattanooga Red Bank in the state playoffs, 49-0. A week later, they faced Covington and steamrolled past them 52-0. On the season, THS outscored opponents 469-93, averaging 39.1 points a game. In their last six games, the Vikings shut out four opponents and only allowed 22 points.
Members of the team were Jim Burleson, Danny Shabledeen, Pat Miller, David Hyde, Jim Stoots, Gene Reedy, Danny Strouth, Ray Mutter, Richard Stacey, Wes Burleson, Butch Bolling, Eddie Fowler, Richard Moran, Fred Vance, Jim Devault, Steve Bourne, Gil Kyle, Eddie Webb, Craig Kistner, John White, Hugh David, Don Ford, David Bibee, John McDaniels, Larry Silcox, Mark Wedel, Phil Woolwine, Ricky Moore, Chip Kistner, Steve Boretsky, Eddie Roberts, Gary Tester, Ken Miller, Harvie Hoskins, George Heath, Eric Abston, Greg Jones, Mark Rowlett, Eddie Hirsch, Allen Nestor, Don Richter, Martin Sells.
